Pickle & Passivation

Stainless isn't stainless until it's passivated.

 

The problem

New stainless steel isn't automatically corrosion-resistant. Fabrication takes that away — and chemistry gives it back.

 

Welding, grinding, and forming leave heat tint, free iron, and embedded contaminants on stainless surfaces. Left in place, they become initiation sites for rust and pitting on a material you paid a premium for specifically so it wouldn't rust. Skip the step, and you find out during operation — the expensive way.

 

The two-step fix

1. Pickling

A controlled acid treatment removes the damaged, contaminated surface layer — heat tint, weld scale, free iron, and embedded particles.

2. Passivation

The cleaned surface is treated to restore the uniform chromium-oxide film that gives stainless steel its corrosion resistance. The system starts life with its full designed protection.

  • Right-sized chemistry — where no cleaning spec is defined, we engineer a cost-effective methodology that restores corrosion resistance without overly aggressive techniques. Milder chemistry means less hazardous waste, simpler neutralization, and lower cost.

  • Remote-site capability — we've executed passivation scopes at remote sites hours from disposal outlets, with limited utilities and congested schedules. Efficient use of every gallon hauled in is designed into the plan, not improvised on site.
